While doing your basic dog training it is best to execute the lessons away from any distractions like birds or cats that he might chase. Walk with him to an empty field or park where there is plenty of free space. Teaching the sit command is fairly easy, tell your dog to sit, then place one hand under his jaw and your other hand on his back near the tail bone, gently tilt his head up and push his rear end down, when he is in the sitting position make a fuss of him by patting him, then give him a biscuit or what ever treats you have brought along to reward him with.
If you keep repeating this lesson, your dog will respond to the sit command, because he knows that by doing what he is told he will be rewarded and also because he can sense that you are delighted with his efforts. Ultimately your dog will heed you as a matter of course, and there will be no need to give him a reward.
