We live in a society that requires that in order to succeed we have to emulate our peers, seek out career opportunities, work hard to earn more money so that we can put our children into better educational institutions. However, you will be badly disadvantaged if you are a single mum.
If you are a single mother, the impression is that you will be a business liability, and in a few states, it is legal to ask for the marital status of a job applicant, and find out how many kids there are. Employers claim this permits them to refuse to hire single mums, and therefore evade paying health care premiums for their kids. Or, if they do choose to employ them, to voluntarily pay them less to offset the perceived health care expenses. Yet, because it is allowable by law, this is not regarded as being discriminatory. Single mums rights groups throughout the country are denouncing the legality of this type of behavior.
Single mothers were told to get off welfare and rejoin the workforce, but recruiting centers are decidedly campaigning against them. Lots of single mothers work more than ten hours a day to support their young ones, with little help from the state or departed dads. Yet, they are hired at lower wages than single or married women, provided that they are given a job to start with. They have minimal support and have to engage someone to mind the children during their shift at work. If they get sick, the situation becomes bleak, both in terms of money and care for the kids.
Some years ago, the government census return showed that over 10 million single mums live in America. Plenty of these single mums are getting together in small groups to carry the fight for single mums rights. Child care centers, financial and social services are some of the benefits these groups provide. Some single mothers are pleading with members of congress to rescind laws that make it acceptable to inquire into a persons personal affairs. Single mums organizations are growing rapidly in every corner of the land, in their determined effort for single mums rights, so that other single mums, such as they, will have identical rights at work.
