There are a few basic garden tools that every gardener needs to have. These garden tools are required for working in your garden and enable you to perform vital tasks that will increase the health of the soil and your plants. If you are just starting out, do not simply go for the highest priced garden tools, thinking that they are the best. As you become more practiced and familiar with gardening, you will discover which type of garden tools are most suitable and can then invest a little more in those. The first garden tool on your list should be a shovel. Every gardener needs a shovel for turning the soil, digging holes and filling in those holes. A similar garden tool is a trowel, but you will need to get on your knees to do the digging. Shovels with rubber handle are usually easier to handle, but this will be a personal choice. Shovel with wide, rounded blades can move the soil faster. Many shovels are also designed to take the stress off your wrist.

Rakes are also essential garden tools. There are several types that are designed for garden use. A typical yard rake is useful for clearing away the fall leaves before spring planting. Smaller, narrower rakes may be used around fragile plants and shrubs. These tend to come with smaller handles and rake heads.

Garden hoes will make short work of all the pesky weeds in your garden. The solid steel blade will slice through the soil quickly, making the work surprisingly enjoyable for many. You will need to choose a hoe based on the working area. If you are working in a tight space, choose those with smaller blades.

The essential watering cans and a hose round out the list of required garden tools. Normal rainfall may not be enough for certain plants, so a good-sized watering can is important. Be sure to handle the watering can in the store and see how it feels. A good quality watering can will be balanced in your hand because of the placement of the handle. Do not get an over-sized watering can just you will not be able to lift it comfortably. As for hoses, the price usually reflects the quality, so you should buy the best you can afford.
